Gay marriage in Greece, two years on. What changed for couples, and what did not.

3 August 2026· Theo & Thanasis

In February 2024 the Greek parliament legalised same sex marriage, the first Orthodox majority country in the world to do it. Two years on, we get asked a version of the same question every week. Does it actually change anything for a couple coming on holiday?

What the law gave

More than most visitors realise. Married same sex couples can adopt. Same sex parents are entitled to the same parental leave and benefits as anyone else. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics has been prohibited since 2016, and legal gender recognition has not required surgery or a medical diagnosis since 2017.

What it did not

The law stopped short in two places worth knowing. Male couples remain excluded from surrogacy, while female couples can use medically assisted reproduction on medical grounds. And the presumption of parenthood, the rule that automatically recognises a spouse as the second legal parent, was not extended to same sex married couples. If you travel with children, carry your paperwork. That is not paranoia, it is the same advice we would give any family crossing a border.

Day to day, though

Statute books are not what a holiday feels like. Athens, Thessaloniki and Mykonos are relaxed and unbothered. Smaller islands and mountain villages are more conservative, which in practice means quieter rather than hostile. Nobody blinks at two men booking a double room, and if a property ever made you feel otherwise, that is a failure of whoever chose it.

The useful shift since 2024 is not legal at all. It is that Greek tourism has stopped treating gay couples as a niche to be handled carefully and started treating them as customers. That is a lower bar than equality. It is still a real change.
